RISE

Partnering to supercharge the profile and equity of Black-owned businesses in the UK.

RISE is a partnership launched with global communications agency, Weber Shandwick, in 2021. The initiative seeks to supercharge the equity and profile of Black-owned businesses in the UK through Weber Shandwick’s communications expertise. Since 2021, Weber Shandwick has worked with five Black-owned businesses on a pro-bono basis. In its next cohort, due to launch in May 2024, Weber Shandwick will work with three more businesses to accelerate their reach and influence with mainstream audiences.

What is Rise?

RISE is a partnership launched with the Black British Business Awards (BBBA) that sees Weber Shandwick use its communications expertise to supercharge the equity and profile of Black-owned businesses in the UK.

All businesses struggle, but Black-owned businesses have it that much harder, with very real barriers preventing them from reaching their full potential with people, society and in media.

RISE provides Black-owned businesses with pro-bono PR services to accelerate their reach and influence with mainstream audiences. Each chosen business is given £20,000 worth of consultancy time in the form of five packages that each address a distinct communications challenge. These packages will be tailored to each business’ specific needs.

To date, Weber Shandwick has worked with businesses including Chuku’s, the world’s first Nigerian tapas restaurant. Together, Weber Shandwick and Chuku’s launched the six-week charge, a campaign designed to generate 600 bookings in six weeks to keep the business going. The campaign led to over 800 bookings and the launch video went viral, gaining almost 700,000 views across Instagram and Twitter, with retweets from high-profile figures including Jourdan Dunn and Maro Itoje.

In the first cohort of RISE, Weber Shandwick also worked with Inclusion Labs, who create programmes that embed inclusivity into schools; Eva Sonaike, the eponymous interiors company that uses West-African prints in soft furnishings; Jomas Associates, a leading engineering company; and TekiHealth, which provides remote diagnostic solutions.

Through the next cohort of RISE, Weber Shandwick will be working with three more Black-owned businesses in the UK.
